Keyword Portfolios

The first thing to learn about picking keywords is that not all traffic is equal.  Let’s pretend we’re building a website that makes funny “e-cards” (you know, those stupid birthday emails with dancing dogs that sing).  Your e-cards are special and personalized, so you charge a small fee.

If you want to get a lot of web visits, you might be tempted to litter pages of your website with the keyword “free e-cards”, since that is easily the most popular keyword relating to e-cards.  This would be BAD, some might even call it stupid (but not me, of course).  Sure, you would get tons of traffic if you were able to successfully optimize for those keywords, but you wouldn’t get any sales. Why? The minute your visitors see that you charge a fee for your e-cards, they will immediately click out of your site because you didn’t give them what they wanted.  30 seconds in the e-card business, and already you’re failing!

But don’t feel bad, because you’ve learned a valuable lesson: pick keywords that are likely to generate both keywords and sales.   Now, you’ll pick a keyword like “personalized e-cards”.  Sure, you’ll still have a few freeloaders discarding your site like rotten vegetables, but now you’ll catch people looking for something specific.  The golden rule of internet sales: people who want specific things are willing to pay more for them, too.  Create a niche for yourself.  It may seem obvious, but it’s a mistake often made by many websites.  With your new keyword (and many others like it), you’ll be able to trap more web visitors.

How do I pick the right keywords?

Simple.  You hire us.  Why haven’t you done this already?  Is it the way we look?  Do we emit a foul odor?  You are running out of excuses, ladies and gentleman.

Here’s what we do, without giving away too much of our secret sauce…

  1. Keyword Research- We have specially designed software that tracks what keywords people are most frequently typing into search engines.  We then create a list of the most popular keywords.
  2. Filter- We refine the list to so that it contains keywords that will generate both traffic and sales (see failed e-card empire).
  3. Finding Soft Spots- We find keywords your competitors don’t even know exist.  How are we able to do this?  Because we’re really smart.  Really, really, smart.  Trust us, we know.  Every online marketplace has what we call “soft spots”.  These are keywords that aren’t very competitive, but will generate a good amount of traffic.  Soft spots are a great way to start your seo campaign, while you gradually start to compete with the big boys (and girls).

That’s $3 per keyword!

Yes, and pretty cheap if you ask me.  Don’t waste your time writing content and link building if you don’t have the fundamentals.  Keyword optimization will make or break your site!
